Doña Lina - Costa Rica

Let me tell you a little story about one of the coffees we offer at the moment. 

Dona Lina is a farm run by Adelina Fallas - a fourth-generation coffee producer. Her great-grandfather was the first in her family and ever since she can remember, coffee has been present in her family’s lives. Thanks to coffee and the efforts of her grandmother’s side of the family, her family has been able to lead good lives.

For Adelina, her work started at the farm at the age of 18. She discovered specialty coffee in 2016 while participating in a barista course, and I met her at a cupping the year after. Luckily she liked the work right away because due to other circumstances in her life, selling the farm was not readily an option. Her mother, who was the third generation, could not work the farm alone so Adelina stepped in at early age. 

According to Adelina, the traceability and the incentives for the producer are the main benefits to producing specialty coffee. In the beginning, it was an adjustment to budget around the different payment dates, which differ between commercial and specialty contracts. Though this adjustment was a bit challenging in the beginning, the overall benefits outweigh these burdens.

Doña Lina is a small farm of 1 hectare on an altitude of 1650 meters. The farm hold a mix of Caturra and Catuai and this lot is a Red Honey process.  We find this coffee to have a soft mouth feel with notes of peach, mango, caramel and
chocolate.

For me, the Matroska symbolize the three generations of women that have kept the farm alive and moved it forward into the world of speciality.
